Interview With Mr. Oteka

Today's events consisted of a wonderful interview with my fellow designer Shako Oteka.  Shako is a well established photographer and graphic designer with international vision and business marketing finesse.   We are beginning a business venture together creating creative T-shirts.  At Borders I asked him a couple of questions to get a grasp of his vision for  the T'shirts.

M: Shak..what's is your reason for designing tee shirts?  What makes them Important?

S: I believe t'shirts were created to tell a story.  Clothes in general do that.  It expresses a for-shadowing of the person who is wearing it.   The shirts have to convey a message.  They must be able to communicate the beliefs, values, and personality of the wearer.

M: I feel you on that.  I notice many tees look cool but have no distinct meaning or definition.  It lacks heart and contains no message for the viewer to interact with it.    What should a shirt design be like?

S: Provoke.  T-shirt designs should make you think and provoke one to act.   Sometimes it takes an awkward message, or creative phrase that causes a demand for change or action to arise within the viewer.  We as designers should push buttons, tell a story, and offer a request.

M: That is so true.  We as designers have a special gift of bringing a vision from our minds into a physical visual reference.  With such ability we have a responsibility to make sure there is substance in that design.
I researched other designers such as Nigo of "A Bathing Ape."  I noted how he began at grass roots and offered his products in an exclusive fashion which really created a crazy buzz in china.  Should our line do the same?

S: Most definitely.  Our line should be exclusive with limited Product lines.   Where we offer our products means a lot as well, with too many distributers comes too many loose ends.  We need to have control of our inventory and product exchange.

There is so much more to come!!!!  This was truly a priceless interview!!  I will post further progress as we move along!!

Live Long and Prosper!!!!!!
